I wasn't exactly what to title this. Here is what's going on with my PC. I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10 this afternoon. I'm running JFW version 17. After the upgrade was completed, the JAWSvoice was changed. While not a huge problem, the speech is garbled and is different from before the upgrade. Only JAWS is affected. None of the system sounds are affected and sound the same as before the upgrade. Any thoughts?
You can go in to Jaws settings and change the voice types.
But, I think I'd reinstall Jaws.
Sometimes for whatevger reasons, upgrading to 10 does best if you install a fresh copy of Jaws.
You need to remove it, then install it fresh.
If you need help on how, say, and I'll explain.
That will be your best fix.
Thanks Wayne. I'll give that a try.
hmm, jaws 17? I'm running 16 on this old chromey machine that I'll return
maybe when the school year comes to an end. I want to upgrade to windows
10 but I'm reluctant to upgrade. what wayne said... I don't want to have to
pay again to install.
The only thing I can think of is the audio driver.
I bought a new Dell laptop which came with this stupid driver that put Jaws into this horrible surround sound thing I could hardly understand. I used a combo of Jaws touch and PC cursor to turn it off, and now it's normal.
You don't have to pay to install, i'm not sure what you're referring too.
she's talking about having to pay for windows 10 install when that time comes because they're offering free installation since it came out
Windows 10 will start costing 119 in July to install.
She has an older machine, so it be cheaper, and more benefit to just buy a new laptop.
You can get a decent one for about 300 to 350, so why pay 119 for windows 10 unless you've got a good computer already?
A note about the sound on that new Dell. That has to do with Dells sound program, not drivers.
You can get in to your sound card settings to change it, or shut it down.
Dell also installs a separate sound program, but that one is not accessible.
That sound you hear is for gamers and music, but I agree, really sucks for Jaws.
If you buy a new Dell, and don't know how to turn it off, you can call tech support, and they will do it remotely for you.
Hi Wayners. Note that the 31 July deadline doesn't apply to we sight loss
sufferers,

the-windows-10-free-upgrade/.
Pretty cool Ed. I didn't know that.
This will be a first for us.
Normally we come under the same buying rules.
I have a new Dell myself, so to poster 5, what software are you talking about exactly? I uninstalled JFW and reinstalled it but it sounds funky; not horrible but just, well.....funky. I may try doing what you did to see if that cleans up my JFW's speech. It probably wouldn't matter to the average guy but I'm kind of a perfectionist, or used to be. Thanks all.
I think I spoke of software. Maybe poster 5 will have other answers for you as well.
I’ll explain how I adjust sound cards on Dell computers, or most others for that matter.
Because we are talking sound, I always suggest you should be careful if you’ve not done this before, or have a backup sound card or sighted help.
What you need to do is turn off sound card enhancements.
In Windows 10 type sound card, or change sound card settings in the search box.
You can get to it a couple other ways, but this will be easiest.
I am assuming you only have the card that came with your computer.
Next after you click that one, you’ll be under sounds. You’ll find your card, or the default card, because that is the one you want by pressing down arrow.
Your computer will ask you to select the card.
If you only have one installed, this will be easy.
Next leaving it on the one you want, press tab until you come to properties
Press enter and you’ll be on general.
Using your control+tab go over to enhancements.
Tab and you should find disable all enhancements, or if you desire, you can play with them to see how they sound.
I think Jaws sounds best with them off, so that the sound if dry, or flat.
Music will still sound correct, because you’ll be getting the recordings enhancements, or settings, not your computers sound card.
Once you check them off, tab to okay, and you are finished.
Note, sometimes you won’t hear anything, and must restart the computer.
Most times I never click the okay, but use alt F4 to get out of the settings, because I have check them off.
I do restart the computer, if I’m not using my USB sound card tool I have for this sort of work.
I run Jaws on it, that way I always have Jaws working, so can make adjustments if something doesn’t work correctly.
Note, Dell computers sometimes use Dell’s sounds, and that isn’t accessible, so I go about it this way.
Many times you’ll be just fine.
Sighted help, or calling Dell to adjust it for you is my suggestion if you are not comfortable, because once sounds are off, you can’t see to fix them without help without a second card.
Good luck.
Thanks man, I'll give this a try.
If you have more questions, ask and I'll try to help.
I have a del and the sounds manager is only accessible via OCr, as posted by wayne jaws cursor or the invisible cursor both will not be of use to you in the del audio panel. Only jaws' OCR feature will help you or if you want an easier way Wayne's way.
Dan Mathis
Thanks to all for the advice. Luckily, I had a sighted friend come by and we took care of it.
Tom
Works every time. Lol
I do wish Dell would make their audio program accessible. It's pretty slick the adjustments.
Ah. Sigh.
